Description

What a beautiful utopia: great generals who have no desire for their empire and prefer to live as chicken breeders. Romulus the Great, the last emperor of the Roman Empire, stays at his summer residence and cares not a bit about state affairs. He is only interested in his chicken breeding. His ministers become nervous. They beg the emperor to finally do something against the advancing Germans. But Romulus does not even dream of it. He is also not willing to save his empire by selling it to the industrialist Cäsar Rupf. On the contrary: Romulus has deliberately positioned himself at the top of the Roman Empire to give it up to ruin. "It has become a world empire and thus an institution that publicly commits murder, looting, oppression, and plundering at the expense of other peoples." Romulus’s entourage flees. He alone faces the Germans when they reach his villa. But Romulus did not reckon with the Germanic prince Odoaker. He has come to surrender to Romulus out of fear of the future of a great Germanic empire. Friedrich Dürrenmatt stages in a parody the heroism driven to absurdity and the downfall of the Roman Empire to criticize the present.
