Description

What a beautiful utopia: great generals who have no interest in their empire and prefer to live as chicken breeders! Romulus the Great, the last emperor of the Roman Empire, sits in his summer residence and doesn't care a bit about state affairs. He is only interested in his chicken breeding. His ministers become nervous. They beg the emperor to finally do something against the advancing Germans. But Romulus doesn't even dream of it. He is also not willing to save his empire by selling it to the industrialist Caesar Rupf. On the contrary: Romulus has schemed his way to the top of the Roman Empire to let it perish. "It has become a world empire and thus an institution that publicly practices murder, plunder, oppression, and arson at the expense of other peoples." Romulus' entourage flees. When the Germans finally reach his villa, he faces them alone. But Romulus did not reckon with the Germanic prince Odoacer. He has come to subjugate Romulus out of fear of the future of a great Germanic empire. FRIEDRICH DÜRRENMATT (1921–1990) is considered, alongside Max Frisch, the most important Swiss playwright of the 20th century. In "Romulus the Great," he parodies the fall of the Roman Empire, imagines power-weary rulers, and plays his bitterly dark game with the supposedly strong of this world.
