Romulus the Great

Description

What a beautiful utopia: great generals who have no desire for their empire and prefer to live as chicken breeders. Romulus the Great, the last emperor of the Roman Empire, doesn't care a bit about state affairs. He is only interested in his chicken breeding. While the ministers despair at the advancing Germans, he remains undeterred. He neither wants to fight nor sell the empire to the industrialist Caesar Rupf. On the contrary: he has deliberately maneuvered into power to end the world empire, which for him is based only on violence and exploitation. Romulus' entourage flees. Alone, he faces the Germans when they reach his villa. But Romulus did not reckon with the Germanic prince Odoacer. He has come to subjugate Romulus, out of fear for the future of a great Germanic empire. Friedrich Dürrenmatt imagines power-weary rulers and plays his bitterly wicked game with the supposedly strong of this world. Production:
