Description

Around 1600, the Portuguese Gaspar Fernandes and the Spaniard Pedro Bermúdez served as organists and music directors at the Cathedral of Guatemala. Fernandes was tasked with collecting, organizing, and transcribing the music that the Cathedral of Guatemala had acquired over the previous hundred years. Among this was the "Missa de Bomba" by Pedro Bermúdez, a parody of the "Ensalada La Bomba" by Mateo Flecha el viejo. The "Ensalada" (Salad) is a poetic-musical form that humorously mixes various rhythms, languages, and themes—usually centered around Christmas. Mateo Flecha el viejo is considered one of the most significant Ensalada composers of the 16th century, alongside Pedro Villa. His "Salad: La Bomba" (The Pump) tells the story of a shipwreck: Amid desperate cries and calls, the crew seeks divine rescue. "Pump! Pump the water out!" is the first line as they hope to empty the boat. Conducted by Josué Meléndez. Doors open at 17:45 - Concert at 18:15.
