Description
Travel books with images Harald Hammel: "Entranced – Life on the Western Irish Islands"
A gin made from seaweed. An eagle's nest in subtropical surroundings. A cable car over the Atlantic. A radio station run by amateur journalists. On the islands off the west coast of Ireland, nothing is as expected. Harald Hammel and Stefan Schnebelt take us to the edge of Europe and tell the story of the last inhabitant of the tidal island Omey, portray a reclusive painter on the artist island Sherkin, and describe the farmers' commitment to nature on Achill Island and the hard everyday life of a young couple who care for tourists on the ghost island Great Blasket Island for a few months. All against the backdrop of Ireland's history, shaped by emigration. To this day, leaving home on the thirteen visited islands remains a major issue, and their residents resist depopulation. But jobs are scarce—and the infrastructure for daily life is often inadequate. This book also addresses this: the pursuit of an island life with a future.
Harald Hammel (*1973), a Germanist and historian, previously worked as a political journalist for several Swiss daily newspapers and is now a media spokesperson in the Swiss Federal Department of Environment, Energy and Transport. He has been traveling regularly in Ireland for over thirty years in his free time. Gunnar Kunz: "Scotland – Rugged Beauty"
Discover Scotland's unknown sides. Experience awakening spring nature, lush summer vegetation, the colorful autumn forests, and snow-covered mountains. Be captivated by the wild beauty of the Highlands, the west coast, and the islands Skye, Harris, Lewis, Orkney, and Shetland. Gunnar Kunz, who lived in Scotland for two years and has traveled the country for 35 years, shares stories and images of stormy peaks and foggy moors, a fairy valley and thirty-meter-high dunes, castles, archaeological sites, and Viking festivals, quirky encounters, unusual places, and their stories. Along the way, learn where Scotland's last wilderness is, what you experience on a trip with a postal bus, why mourners carry coffins across the island, what it’s like to stay in a train carriage, and how a guardian angel might appear—short: where Scotland's soul resides. Gunnar Kunz worked for fourteen years at various theaters in Germany, mainly as an assistant director, before becoming a self-employed author in 1997. Since then, he has published over forty plays, mainly fairy tale adaptations and musicals, and has also authored two children's books, short stories, radio plays, song lyrics, and numerous novels, many in the fantasy genre. His most famous works are twelve crime novels depicting the history of the Weimar Republic. In 2010, he was nominated for the Wartholz Literary Prize. Sara Pütter: from "Water, Rocks, Rage – My Path to Myself through Canada's Wilderness"
Sara Pütter escapes a past threatening to suffocate her: grief, poverty, disappointed expectations. After graduating, she sets out into the untamed wilderness of British Columbia. Together with two hunters, she crosses rugged mountain landscapes, paddles across crystal-clear lakes, and immerses herself in a primal world governed by its own laws. Nature is breathtaking—and unpredictable. But not only the elements challenge her: social interactions also become a test of endurance. Vulnerability demands trust, closeness, and risk. Sara fights hunger, exhaustion—and the demons of her childhood. And as she loses herself in the vastness of nature, she prepares for the greatest adventure: her life.
Sara Pütter, born in 1991, is a freelance artist, illustrator, and lecturer. She grew up in an artist family and studied scenography and communication design with a focus on illustration in Kiel and Basel. In 2015, she traveled to Canada with a one-way ticket—a journey that gave her life a new direction. This resulted in a memoir about life in the wilderness and self-discovery—about moments when landscape and life merge inseparably.
