With the spectacular work "Glacier Dreams" (2023), Refik Anadol (*1985 in Istanbul, lives in Los Angeles) uses artificial intelligence to address one of the most important issues of our time: climate change. For this work, Refik Anadol utilized over 100 million images from online and institutional archives, along with an additional dataset specifically collected, consisting of over 10 million images of glaciers from Iceland, Greenland, and Antarctica. Beyond glacier research and with the help of artificial intelligence, Anadol creates poetic experiences with touching images of glaciers and aims to draw attention to their fragility. This work is now presented at Kunsthaus Zürich as an immersive installation that engages the entire body from all sides. It involves the senses of sight, hearing, and even smell, inviting visitors to reflect sensually, physically, and intellectually on the effects of glacier melting. Anadol's pixels recall the brushstrokes of the impressionist Claude Monet, who anticipated immersive art in the form of painting with his famous large water lily paintings at Kunsthaus. Anadol coined the term "data painting," where paintings no longer need to dry but take on new forms in a constant flow, questioning the closed nature of a work of art.
