Guided hike - Varen, Salgesch, Sierre

Description

Like semi-nomads, this guided walk offers to follow the traces of Valaisan transhumants from Varen to Sierre, where the "Maison du remuage" celebrates its 300th anniversary. This form of seasonal migration, the Valaisan transhumance, also called remuage, has marked the rhythm of life for entire families: in spring and summer, people descended into the valley to work in the vineyards; in winter, they returned to their mountain villages. The Albinerhaus, Eischlergässi, and La Maison du Remuage are authentic examples of mobility born not out of freedom, but necessity. Living in Albinen, working in Varen: For generations, families from Albinen have owned vineyards on the slopes of Varen, located lower down and enjoying a milder climate. The daily walk of several hundred meters of elevation was arduous, so winemakers used simple lodges directly in the vineyard. The house in Albinen served as a place for sleeping, working, and storage during busy periods. As for the Mouling district in Salgesch, many farmers from mountain villages in Upper Valais owned small plots of vines in Salgesch. The inhabitants of Eischoll, in particular, were very present in Salgesch and even gave their name to an alley, the "s'Eischlergässi." The walk ends in Sierre, for the celebration of the 300 years of the Maison du Remuage: The municipalities of Val d’Annivers are closely linked to the city of Sierre. Each village had its district. The peculiarity of this transhumance was that each family had several residences.
