Description
“My true subject is suffering,” noted Dmitri Shostakovich in an interview about his music. These words resonate with particular urgency in relation to his Eighth String Quartet from 1960, from which the Chamber Symphony Op. 110a was later derived, arranged by Rudolf Barshai. The second half of the evening is dedicated to one of the most significant works of European music – Symphony No. 9 in D minor by Ludwig van Beethoven.
