Description

The third concert in the series unfolds a dialogue between two poles of 20th-century French music - Maurice Ravel and Olivier Messiaen. The first half of the evening is dedicated to Ravel and the theme of musical exoticism: the sensual Arabic coloring of Shéhérazade and arrangements of Greek and Jewish folk songs create a colorful palette of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern motifs. The second half features the central work of the program: Messiaen's monumental cycle Harawi. Chant d’amour et de mort, the first part of his "Tristan Trilogy." Based on Andean folklore and Peruvian myths, Messiaen reinterprets the eternal story of Tristan and Isolde. Program Part I Maurice Ravel - Shéhérazade Cinq mélodies populaires grecques Deux Mélodies hébraïques Part II Olivier Messiaen - Harawi. Chant d’amour et de mort Cloches d’angoisse et larmes d’adieu Tristan Murail - Cloches d’adieu, et un sourire… "In memoriam Olivier Messiaen" Performers: Antonii Baryshevskyi (NL/UA) – Piano Ukrainian pianist, first prize at the International Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition (Tel Aviv, 2014), second prize at the Busoni Competition (2011). He performs with renowned orchestras and in major halls across Europe, the USA, and Asia, including Wigmore Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, and Berlin Philharmonie. Ekaterina Levental (NL) – Mezzo-soprano and Harpist Raised as a refugee child from a family that moved from Uzbekistan through Israel to the Netherlands. She graduated with honors from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. Together with pianist Frank Peters, she realized the world's first complete recording of Nikolai Medtner's songs - the first CD of the cycle was awarded the international Pure Sound Award.
