For over 150 years, Prodaná nevěsta has dominated Czech opera. No one else, not even Smetana himself, has managed to surpass its popularity, which has become, so to speak, part of our national DNA. At the time it was created – the 1860s – however, "Prodanka" was quite a bold experiment. The opera, which humorously reflects the life of the Czech countryside, is one of the staples of the National Theatre.
