Until the turn of the First World War, the belief in progress of the Fin de Siècle was also reflected musically in ever larger orchestral formations. Former chief conductor James Gaffigan had already worked towards this expansion of symphonic thinking. Now he returns as guest conductor with a program that takes the idea of the monumental in different directions. Rachmaninov's third piano concerto is legendary for its technical and emotional demands. The composer himself called it his “Elephant Concerto”: a work of immense ambition, in which Russian melancholy, virtuosic power, and ecstatic escalation come together. The soloist is Kirill Gerstein. Igor Stravinsky unfolds the large ensemble in “Chant du Rossignol” into a sparkling, exotically colored sound palette. Alexander Scriabin's “Poème de l’Extase” ultimately aims at cosmic dimensions. From vague sound textures, increasingly clear contours emerge until the music condenses into overwhelming mystical radiance.
