These twenty-five short prose pieces, written between 1899 and 1920, constitute this unique collection where Robert Walser's meticulous observation of his peers and daily life is evident, during encounters and solitary wanderings in the city and countryside.
These stories are imbued with a great poetry that reveals in depth what is usually seen on the surface. With Walser, "the countryside then becomes a song and this song was beautiful to die for," writes Stefan Zweig about one of Robert Walser's prose.
He was considered by Franz Kafka, Elfriede Jelinek, Walter Benjamin, Hermann Hesse, and others as one of the most important writers of the 20th century.
He died during a solitary walk in the snow on Christmas Day 1956, almost forgotten by all.
