Description
With her work "Lacuna," PEARLIE FRISCH (*1986, LACHEN) examines gaps that arise from global movements of people, goods, and meanings from the perspective of a Philippine diaspora. For the exhibition at Zimmermannhaus, she combines video, photography, and ceramics into a multi-layered installation about memory, migration, and belonging. The term "Lacuna" refers to a gap or blank space and forms the starting point of the project.
In the video "With Love, Nanay PS.", Frisch addresses familial experiences of language barriers and longing. The starting point is the correspondence of her mother, who migrated from the Philippines to Switzerland. Although the sound of the Tagalog language is familiar, its meaning remains closed to the artist as it was not passed down in the family. Together with choreographer Tomer Zirkilevich, Frisch developed a performance about language loss, transgenerational memory, and trust.
Additionally, the artist connects her family album with photographs from the ETH archive of Swiss merchant Arthur Ruh. From this, ceramic vessels and objects arise that express the gaps created by global entanglements and historical ruptures. STEVE FORS (*1967, DAVENPORT, IOWA, USA) and CHRISTOPH BRÜNGGEL (*1980, BRUGG) create with "still. life" an immersive installation that combines historical nature depictions, sound, and artificial elements into a walkable environment. Based on lithographs from Alfred Edmund Brehm's "Animal World," Fors supplements idyllic nature images with traces of industrial progress, creating unsettling scenes. The works are accompanied by synthesized scents that imitate the depicted insects and plants, as well as insect sounds and a soundscape developed by Brünggel. Natural sounds meet sounds of architecture and machines from European power plants and energy landscapes. Based on imitations of insect sounds, the space is filled with a simulated soundscape of natural sounds, which is repeatedly contrasted compositionally by dystopian-sounding tones. Amid this artificial scenery, the animatronic butterflies of guest artist John Espey move. The installation makes the interconnections of nature, technology, and energy production tangible and encourages reflection on the ecological crisis.
