Panel Discussion & Photo Exhibition - Integration or: Great, someone else is doing it?

From October 1 to 25, 2026, Photobastei will host the photo exhibitions "Bitter Oranges" by Gilles Reckinger and "Spuren der Flucht" by Klaus Petrus. The documentary long-term projects deal with migration – and how images not only depict reality but also shape it. We engage with Opération Ensemble right in the exhibition and mix it with questions on the topic of "Integration." Marielène Froidevaux will lead the discussion with Mona-Lisa Kole, Ahmed Ajil, and Stefan Manser-Egli. The evening is dedicated to the migration policy's burning question: How do you approach integration? What exactly is integration, and who demands it (or not)? Ultimately, the question arises: what does integration mean in a liberal democracy? 6:30 PM Doors open
7:00 PM Panel discussion, followed by a discussion with the audience To the panel: Mona-Lisa Kole (Program Manager for Migration Policy at Frieda and expert on racism issues) has been advocating for anti-discrimination protection and feminist perspectives in migration work for years. Ahmed Ajil (Assistant Professor of Criminology and Security Research at the University of Lucerne) researches topics such as exclusion and violence and, as co-host of the podcast keshmesh, explores questions about migration, power, and masculinity. Stefan Manser-Egli (Board Member of Operation Libero and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Basel) examines in his book Illiberal Integrationism: The Myth of Shared Values (Bloomsbury) how the bureaucratic demand for "common values" in migration and naturalization practices is used for exclusion and why this state-mandated integration contradicts liberal democracy. Marielène Froidevaux (Co-CEO of Operation Libero) moderates the discussion. Opération Ensemble is a format of Operation Libero, where politics, culture, and art unite to advocate for an open, liberal Switzerland and equality.
