Description

Oum initially studied architecture before turning to music and becoming a song architect. Her foundations are the complex rhythms of Morocco, her structures melodies of rare sensuality. Her voice – powerful yet delicate – forms the living material of her art. Even when she employs the languages of jazz, soul, or North African trance, Oum resists any clear categorization. Her music is that of a unique artist: free, boundless, and universal. As an engaged voice of her time, she advocates for freedom, the rights of women and minorities, and an ecological and humanistic vision of the world. In her role as UNAIDS ambassador, she transforms her art into a space of resistance and sharing – a place where spirituality and poetry become powerful forces. With «Dialddar» («homemade»), Oum makes a radical artistic gesture: the composition of an album without string or wind instruments, carried solely by voice and percussion. This decision is both a technical challenge and a clear artistic manifesto. Most percussion instruments were handcrafted in Marrakech. Their sensitive response to temperature and humidity makes each recording fragile, lively, and unpredictable. This organic quality was precisely what Oum wanted to preserve: music that breathes, escapes full control, and finds its truth in the present moment.
