Between Baroque and Romanticism, the compositions of our program move. A cheerful and virtuosic "Church Sonata" and two well-known arias from Mozart's operas "The Abduction from the Seraglio" and "Don Giovanni" open the concert. It is little known that Antonio Vivaldi was also a significant opera composer; around 50 works of this genre are attributed to him. The double concerto in D minor contains many operatic features, recitative passages, dramatic surprises, and two highly vocal solo parts. In the original, it features two oboes sharing the musical lines; we replaced the second oboe with the English horn (also called tenor oboe), enriching the timbres and making the dialogue even more perceptible. Following are two contrasting pieces of musical Romanticism. First, a late vocal work by Franz Schubert, originally composed for tenor solo, choir, and orchestra, with melodic lines also well expressed in a trio arrangement. One of César Franck's most famous organ works (Prelude, Fugue, and Variation) is here complemented by the oboe d’amore and extended with a short recitative for this instrument, which is a third lower and also called alto oboe. The concert concludes with Franz Danzi's "Concertino op. 47". As court chapel master in Karlsruhe, Danzi dedicated his life to Mozart's operas and is considered a pioneer of musical Romanticism, which is beautifully reflected in his "Concertino." Surprising harmonic turns, beautiful melodies, and sound color play characterize his music and bring the concert to a lively end.
