Description

"L’amour est un oiseau rebelle," sings Carmen in Georges Bizet's opera of the same name. Mats Ek, the Swedish dance legend, made Carmen the title character of a ballet in 1992 at the Cullberg Ballet. He closely adheres to the novella by Prosper Mérimée that underlies the opera, in which Don José recounts the story of Carmen from his death cell. In playing with classical gender roles, Mats Ek avoids common Carmen clichés and arrives at a deeply human interpretation. The Australian choreographer Dani Rowe currently leads the Oregon Ballet Theatre. In her piece "Vestige" – set to Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" in the orchestral arrangement by Maurice Ravel – a life is examined. In episodic visions, people, impressions, and experiences pass by the main character, "Human," allowing her to draw new strength from the memories.
