Open Workshop: Souvenirs from the Pile Dwelling Period

Get active together, try out prehistoric techniques, and create inspired by archaeological finds: this is what visitors can do in the open workshop at the Museum of Prehistory. They take home a high-quality handmade souvenir that brings joy for a long time and reminds them of the museum visit. The workshop has long become a popular staple for both young and old.

The offer will be completely renewed for the Pentecost weekend. The work in summer 2026 is inspired by everyday life in the pile dwellings of the Neolithic: from fieldwork, hunting, and fishing on Lake Zug.

The following souvenirs are available:

• Design a pendant from a wild boar tooth. The model for this is a fish-shaped pendant from the Zug-Riedmatt site.
• Sew a pouch from fish leather. Fish was regularly on the menu at Neolithic Lake Zug. It is quite possible that the fish skin was then tanned into leather, as the Inuit did later, for example.
• Make a seed ball and bring the Neolithic plant world home, for example flax, poppy, or the "lantern fruit" Physalis. The cultivation of plants is one of the most significant Neolithic achievements.

The open workshop is accessible during the museum's opening hours without registration. The offer is aimed at all guests who like to craft and is suitable for children from primary school age accompanied by an adult. Illustrated instructions in German and English explain each crafting step. For the somewhat more complex leather pouch, the work steps are also available in a video accessible via mobile phone. The materials are available at the reception for a small fee.

General Information

The Museum of Prehistory in Zug offers an open workshop during opening hours where visitors can make their own souvenirs.
