Description

Beethoven anniversary concerts inevitably fall short of Beethoven's own standards. In his famous 1808 Academy concert, he premiered, among other works, the Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, the Fourth Piano Concerto, a concert aria, parts of the C major Mass, and the Choral Fantasy. With a duration of over four hours, even a contemporary found it "too much of a good thing." Therefore, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra bundles central works of Beethoven into a compact focus in December. The Ninth Symphony forms the powerhouse: with it, Beethoven realized the vision of community, freedom, and humanity already present in the Choral Fantasy. The famous final chorus on Schiller's "Ode to Joy" remains more than a musical highlight to this day. It is a utopian appeal to humanity – and a moment where orchestra, choir, and solo voices come together as a great community. Chief conductor Michael Sanderling leads the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the Zurich Sing-Akademie, and a top-class solo quartet with Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, Rachel Frenkel, Mauro Peter, and Yannick Debus. This concert thus brings together central themes of the season: Beethoven as a powerhouse, monumental symphonic music, and strong vocal presence. 6:30 PM | Concert introduction by Dr. Felix Diergarten Cast
