Description
With his bald head, pointed ears, and eerie claw fingers, the figure of Count Orlok has become an iconic character of early cinema. At OPAL, the film classic is presented in a restored version with original music from 1922. As a free adaptation of Bram Stoker's »Dracula«, »Nosferatu« tells the story of a vampire driven by longing for a human woman, who leaves his remote castle in the mountains and causes great havoc. To visually perfect the horror, meticulous preparation was necessary: director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau created artistic sketches for each camera shot and even used a metronome to synchronize the actors' movements to the desired rhythm. The close relationship between visual art, music, theater, and film in the early days of cinema is evident not only in the subtitle »Symphony of Horror«, but also in the staging of the world premiere in 1922. The audience was supposed to appear in Biedermeier costumes to fully immerse themselves in the film's atmosphere.
