Description
The Trojan War is an timeless myth. Its story, oscillating between abduction and seduction, reality and illusion, has traversed centuries, constantly reinventing itself. Euripides proposed a radical version: Helen was never in Troy, only an illusion of herself was taken there (a cloud), while she remained hidden in Egypt. Thus, Greeks and Trojans would have fought a baseless war, for a chimera.
This reading of a blindly led war forms the basis of ANNE CARSON's NORMA JEANE BAKER DE TROIE. Helen becomes Marilyn Monroe – Norma Jeane Baker, her birth name. Her Menelaus is named Arthur, like Arthur Miller, Marilyn's writer and husband. From then on, Helen and Norma Jeane become one: a woman shaped by male gazes, an object of fantasies and violence, caught in a destiny that does not belong to her.
