State Castle Telč - II. Residential Rooms of the Last Owners and I. Renaissance Halls
The project 'In the Footsteps of Noble Families' carries the subtitle 'Nobility on the Road' in 2026. The State Castle in Telč has significantly contributed to this project. The noble family Podstatzky-Lichtenstein traveled repeatedly across Europe since the mid-19th century, as well as to more distant destinations like Africa and Southwest Asia. The African journeys undertaken by Count Karel Podstatzký left a deep imprint on the collections of the Telč Castle. In 1931, the so-called African Hall was installed, where his collection was presented as part of the family museum. The noble family also succumbed to the newly developing phenomenon of automobilism in the early decades of the 20th century. One of the cars that appeared in the family's fleet was the 1928 Tatra 17 Phaeton. A private collector lent the same car to the exhibition of the last owner's apartment. Cars were widely used by the family for traveling throughout Europe. The last generation of owners, Leopold IV. Podstatzký and his wife Marie née Kinská, were intensely engaged in sports activities. The theme of traveling for sports and health intersects with the theme of automobilism, as the family used cars for trips to the nearby Tatras and Alps for skiing. The countess also actively played hockey, and the same hockey club in Telč still exists today. Other travels include the last owners' expedition to Europe and Turkey in the 1930s, from which they brought back numerous souvenirs. These items subsequently furnished the interiors of their residential rooms and became part of their everyday life. On this journey, the couple also utilized maritime transport, and the countess even tried her hand at steering the overseas ship Milwaukee. The main goal of the 'Nobility on the Road' project is the partial reinstatement and restoration of the apartment of the noble family at the castle in Telč. Selected rooms have been returned to their authentic appearance as they looked between the two world wars. The route will be accessible to visitors and the general public starting April 24, 2026.
