„Henry“ grooves and rumbles, blows and shouts inspired by New Orleans jazz. „Henry“ comes with charm but also subtlety. „Henry“ sways between melancholy and joy of life. Saarland saxophonist Nicole Johänntgen has been on stage for 27 years, playing jazz with passion. In 2016, Johänntgen spent half a year in New York. During this meaningful time, she also traveled to New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. There, she recorded her compositions with musicians playing sousaphone, trombone, drums, and saxophone. The recording resulted in music for the heart as well as deep friendship. Thus, the band with Jon Ramm on trombone, Steven Glenn on sousaphone, and Paul Thibodeaux on drums will go on the Henry IV CD release tour in fall 2026. The spectacular and legendary “Second Line” drum groove from New Orleans meets the pumping sousaphone, which handles the bass range and lays the harmonic foundation for fiery improvisations between trombone and saxophone. Nicole Johänntgen met her fellow musicians, all of whom lived in New Orleans at the time and now live scattered across America, through mutual acquaintances. The American saxophonist Arthur Blythe, who gained attention in the nineties with tuba, conga, and cello, inspired her to play with the sousaphone. Another source of inspiration is her family. Nicole Johänntgen’s father Heinrich “Henry” Johänntgen played the trombone as a wake-up call in the early morning hours during her school days, signaling it was time to get up. “Henry” is a tribute to her family. Nicole Johänntgen has recorded 36 albums so far, 33 of which have been released. She has received multiple awards, is an influencer on social media, and in May 2023, she received the Lichtenburg Prize. “Nicole has something very special in her playing – a big and generous heart.
