Description

How two refugees experience Switzerland. Irena Brežná came from Czechoslovakia in 1968, studied Slavic studies, philosophy, and psychology in Basel, worked as a journalist, author, and interpreter, received several awards including the Swiss Literature Prize in 2012 for her novel The Ungrateful Stranger and the Basel Culture Prize in 2021. A text about her naturalization will be published in 2026. Shqipe Sylejmani migrated in 1992, at the age of four, as an Albanian from Kosovo, grew up partly in Längi (Pratteln), worked after an apprenticeship at a bank, studied journalism and communication, searches for identity in her novel Burden and Blessing, participated in the Swiss Wrestling Festival (2022), presides over the association Kulturwerkstatt: Techno. Homeland for all people: young, old, migrated, undocumented, displaced, hidden, disadvantaged, queer... Everyone should participate in social life, contribute, and feel comfortable without excluding others or feeling superior. Homeland is not an exclusive security but rather a creative possibility. Sometimes it has become a nationalist conservative ideology. Some reject the term for this reason. Others open it up for a resistant belonging that allows doubts and approaches contradictions constructively. We reflect on different expressions and concepts of homeland.
