Description

The Beethoven power center radiates widely this season – into Romanticism, into Modernity, and at the same time back into the classical core repertoire of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. This concert shows Beethoven at an important transition point: between classical form, symphonic thinking, and a new expressive power. The Mass in C Major op. 86 stylistically stands between the festive-representative mass settings of Joseph Haydn and Beethoven's later, clearly more symphonic "Missa solemnis." The choral part ranges from block-like appeals to artfully designed fugato passages. The Collegium Vocale of the Franciscans of Lucerne, a Lucerne quality choir, is on stage for this; soloists include singers from the Lucerne Theater. After the break, Beethoven's Sixth Symphony leads out into nature. The "Pastorale" is not mere landscape painting, but music full of inner movement: murmuring brooks, rural scenes, a veritable thunderstorm, and finally grateful calm after the storm. At the podium is Maxime Pascal, a French conductor who has internationally distinguished himself both with historical performance practice and contemporary projects. This promises no heavy monumental style, but clarity, detail sharpness, and lively sound speech. Cast
