Description

«Nachtstrom» is an electrifying sound research that begins at sunset at the earliest and showcases various forms of electronic music on stage: live electronics meet acousmatic soundscapes, audiovisual performances with improvisations, and more.
Maria Chávez, born in Lima and now living in New York City, is a sound artist and DJ, best known for her work as an abstract turntablist. Themes of chance, luck, and failure run through her work, which ranges from improvised performances to sound and marble sculptures, visual art, book objects, and multi-channel installations.
Her artistic practice is rooted in «Deep Listening», a form of embodied listening developed by her mentor Pauline Oliveros. A special feature of her performances is the rare «RAKE Double Needle»: two needles allow different parts of a record to be played simultaneously. Chávez combines this technique with fragments of broken records to create sound experiences where the unpredictable becomes an artistic principle.
Her works have been presented internationally at the Rewire Festival, Counterflows Festival, Donaueschingen Festival, as well as at MoMA PS1, the Getty, documenta 14, and the Judd Foundation. Her 2012 book «Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable» is considered an important reference text on experimental turntablism. Participants and additional information:
