Description
How do we as a society deal with the fact that fewer and fewer people use journalistic media to inform themselves? About half of young people today only get their information from social media platforms. Their business model is based on showing us targeted content with which we are likely to interact strongly. This can promote polarizing content and create digital "bubbles" where increasingly people with similar views gather. These developments are global and no longer just affect young people. For print media and established journalistic institutions, this change means they need to adapt their structures and business models to survive long-term. At the same time, new forms of journalistic work and new ways to make information accessible are emerging in the digital space. What does this change mean for our society and our democracy? How can we maintain interest in and trust in high-quality journalism? What risks arise when we increasingly have different ideas about what facts are, and algorithms show us different realities? And what opportunities do the same digital platforms offer as new and accessible sources of information? Panel discussion with: Caroline Dettling, journalist at SRF Newsroom and documentary filmmaker
Andrina Schmid, journalist at #UsetheNews
Daniel Süss, professor of media psychology (ZHAW)
Moderation: Salvador Atasoy, producer and host at SRF This event is free of charge and organized in cooperation with SRG BE-FR VS and the city of Bern.
