Play - A Chronicle from the Thirty Years' War by Bertolt Brecht War is Mother Courage's livelihood – and at the same time her ruin. As an unwavering market woman, she travels through the landscapes of Europe ravaged by the Thirty Years' War with her wagon. She follows the armies, camps on the edges of battlefields, trades with soldiers as well as the hungry, sells what is needed: bread, boots, schnapps, fabrics – always in the shadow of death and destruction. Where others see misery, she senses business. She has learned to survive in a world where morality is a luxury. She calculates coldly, bargains hard, and knows how to assert herself in a brutal environment dominated by men. Between greed and motherly love, between pragmatism and rebellious peasant cunning, she moves with shimmering contradictions. She wants to make a profit – "her cut" – at any cost. Her business sense and care for her three children are inextricably linked – yet they repeatedly come into deadly conflict. The longer the war lasts, the more bitter irony of her existence becomes apparent: she lives off the war, but she cannot control it. Every attempt to protect her children from the war's grasp fails. Step by step, they themselves become part of the cruel machinery. Mother Courage's busyness does not protect – it only entangles her deeper into the system she believes she can exploit... Bertolt Brecht's famous parable is more than a historical drama. It depicts a society that unconditionally submits to the laws of the market and in which even war becomes an economic opportunity. At the center is Mother Courage, one of the most impressive female figures in theater: strong, tough, hungry for life – and at the same time tragically entangled in the logic of a system that costs her everything in the end.
