The Generations Chamber Orchestra GEKO, under the direction of Alex van Wijnkoop, invites you on a fascinating musical journey through time. The program "Mozart at the Cannabich House" explores the deeper historical and personal connection between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the Mannheim court conductor Christian Cannabich. The evening centers around the Andante un poco adagio from the piano sonata in C major KV 309. The creation of this work in late autumn 1777 offers an intimate insight into Mozart's Mannheim period: at the Cannabich house, he found a familial, private atmosphere, starkly contrasting with his later purely professional obligations and the rigid court diktat of the Paris ballet music "Les petits riens." In this private setting, Mozart composed the sonata for Cannabich's thirteen-year-old daughter Rose (Rosa), whom he immediately taught himself. Mozart expressed pride in the Andante in his letters to his father Leopold, noting that this slow movement is a musical portrait of the young student: "the andante will please us the most; for it is quite suitable for madam Rosa. As the andante is, so is she." To teach the piece exactly as he envisioned, Mozart annotated the manuscript with meticulous, unusually detailed markings for dynamics and articulation. He demanded utmost precision in teaching: "She will have to struggle, but it will turn out beautifully." This intimate chamber music is contrasted by Christian Cannabich's pulsating "Ballet d’action," capturing the famous Mannheim orchestral brilliance. The evening's highlight is the Concertante for two violins by Johann Baptist Moralt, masterfully performed by soloists Petra Barbaric and Pierre-Alain Baron.
