Description
Starting in 1914, Monet mainly painted the water lily ponds around his house in Giverny. The motif served as a template for large-scale wall paintings, which were installed after his death in 1926 in two rooms of the Tuileries Garden's Orangerie in Paris. They received little attention for a long time. In 1949, the Kunsthalle Basel exhibited works from the cycle for the first time, and in 1952 Emil Bührle donated two of the wall paintings to the Kunsthaus Zürich. However, it was not until 1955, when MoMA in New York acquired a Water Lilies painting, that perceptions changed: the previously considered "decorative" wall paintings were now regarded as precursors to abstract painting.
