Description

Norwegian Nobel Prize winner Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson once wrote about his home country: "Norway is a country where nature is so immense that man only feels like a guest in a dream." In this program, Vilde Frang, artist in residence from Oslo, invites us on a journey into musical dream worlds. The monumental Sonata for two violins by Eugène Ysaÿe creates the illusion of an orchestral dreamscape for just two instruments. Dense motivic networks create a swirling stream of luminous sound colors. The Capricci by Norwegian composer Bjarne Brustad combines elements from Norwegian folk music with stylistic techniques from neoclassical music. Brustad translates the brittle, overtone-rich sound of the Hardanger fiddle through new 20th century playing techniques. Béla Bartók was very impressed by the Serenade for two violins and viola by Zoltán Kodály and wrote: "This composition is a genuine modern product of Hungarian culture. It is extraordinarily rich in melodies whose exotic characteristics are determined by the strong rubato of old peasant music." Vilde Frang, violin
