Building with Gravity: Heinz Isler's Physical Models

How does one build with gravity? The Swiss civil engineer Heinz Isler (1926–2009) designed his elegant concrete shells not at the drawing board, but through experimental means. Based on observations in his garden as well as experiments with hanging models, foam, and air, he sought the perfect architectural form. This tour takes you into Isler's world and shows, using original models, how iconic architecture emerged from gravity. As part of the accompanying program to the exhibition "Models – Shaping Knowledge" at extract, this visit takes you to a place where scientific models are still used in research and teaching today.
