Description

Midwife creates a mix of shoegaze, lo-fi, and dream pop. She describes her music as Heaven Metal. One of the main figures in the indie ambient world with a penchant for shoegaze is clearly Madeline Johnston, aka Midwife, who has been active for nearly ten years. The musician and producer based in the southern USA is known for her reduced experimental music, which manages to create a peculiar concentrated silence in her concerts. Through her minimalist guitar work with repetitive structures, hypnotic clouds with a pulling effect emerge. Over this, an unhurried voice flows, filled with reverb and soundscapes with loose ends. Among her most notable releases is certainly Luminol (Flenser Records, 2021), with which Midwife made a cozy spot for herself in the heavy music corner. Her latest album No Depression In Heaven (same label, 2024), recorded at home, marked a return to simple DIY production methods. The biggest protagonist in Midwife's lyrics is grief, and she has also referred to it as the mourning for 'the world as we know it.' Something we are likely collectively experiencing right now: we mourn the future, but in the now. Midwife provides the soundtrack for that.
