Description
A disaster is looming: The theater is full, but the entire cast along with the set is stuck in traffic on the highway. The 856th performance of the crime shocker "The Monk with the Slap" threatens to be canceled, and the urgently needed evening revenue will be lost. Only assistant director Katrin and lighting technician Klaus have driven ahead in their own car with the costumes and are on time. What to do? Not entirely voluntarily, they dare the extreme: they have seen the performance 855 times, know every line and gesture. So why not step into the roles themselves? At first, they bicker at every opportunity, and there are many. Then they free themselves and merge with their role models. With Karin Dor and Joachim Fuchsberger, with Elisabeth Flickenschildt, Klaus Kinski, and Eddi Arent – the original actors of the famous Edgar Wallace films from the fifties and sixties. In wild improvisation, they jump from role to role and conjure up an over-the-top, wildly funny crime show on stage, which always skirts the edge of failure. For the crime plot, author Stefan Keim – a confessed Wallace fan – has combined the typical elements from the films. A sinister monk is causing havoc in London. Scotland Yard is under pressure, and police chief Sir John passes this on to his subordinates. Sergeant Smith and Inspector Higgins – an exchange officer from Australia – investigate in a strange bridge club and at the estate of the shady Lady Jane. Meanwhile, the honest, bourgeois family Boulders falls into the sights of the slapping monk. Repeatedly, however, the assistant director and the lighting technician step out of their roles and reveal various secrets from their own lives. Why does Katrin claim she has a lover no one has seen? And what role does the amateur theater group Apfelblüte play in the life of the lighting technician? "The Monk with the Slap" is a wonderful thriller fun with nostalgia effect and a rapid parable about the impossible tasks that life sometimes sets us – with two enthusiastic performers playing for their survival.
