Fredersen's son Freder falls in love with the worker leader Maria. At the same time, Rotwang, the inventor, creates a steel robot, which he gives the appearance of Maria on Fredersen's instructions. The false Maria incites the workers, who leave their machines and thus trigger the flooding of the city. Can the city be saved through the efforts of Fredersen and Maria? "Metropolis" is probably the best-known German feature film of all time. Fritz Lang's monumental silent film classic is considered the prototype of the dystopian science fiction film and is still a model for numerous genre films both in terms of content and aesthetics. Fritz Lang's science fiction film about the rebellion of the working class against the ruling upper class of the future city Metropolis is also one of the most important restorations in film history. In 2001, "Metropolis" was the first film to be included in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. More information about the sensational discovery of the lost scenes and the elaborate restoration of the silent film classic can be found on the Murnau Foundation website, www.murnau-stiftung.de.
