Four guys. Four microphones. Christmas. They've done it again: MAYBEBOP presents with "Beautiful Illusion" their fifth Christmas album. And it's amazing what the four can still extract from the festival of festivals and how fresh and unspoiled it still sounds after over 20 years of band history! On "Beautiful Illusion," alongside newly interpreted classics like "Carol of the Bells," "The Night Has Come" or the lively "Heidschi Bumbeidschi," many original German songs offer new perspectives on the holy night: The tragicomic tango "The Death of Santa Claus" and the touching "What I Owned" deal with the belief in the man with a beard in very different ways, the energetic folk-rock "The Ballad of Fanta-Klaus" tells of a surprising encounter with him, the pointed "Christmas Daydreams" look behind the facade of some Christmas idylls, and the "Evergreen" sung from the perspective of a Christmas tree is a must-have in every standard dance course. Undisputed highlight of the album is clearly the German rap parody "KNG of LightZ," which clarifies who has the highest bling-bling factor: brilliantly funny and stylistically spot on. The vocal band once again underscores its exceptional status: "Beautiful Illusion" is bursting with ideas, equally virtuosic and down-to-earth, surprising from track to track. Typical MAYBEBOP.
