Description
Bohuslav Martinů engaged intensively with the vocal music of the Renaissance for decades. In particular, the madrigal, with its combination of polyphonic structure, linguistic design, and chamber music transparency, became an important source of inspiration for him. His own madrigals connect this historical tradition with a modern, independent musical language. The SWR Vocal Ensemble under Yuval Weinberg juxtaposes Martinů's madrigal compositions with works from the English Renaissance by William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Weelkes, and Anthony Holborne. Together with the historical wind ensemble Capella Helvetica, the sound world that fascinated Martinů in his engagement with ancient music becomes tangible. The program illustrates how Martinů understood historical forms not as a retrospective but as a living foundation for a new musical language of the 20th century. Featured artists: SWR Vocal Ensemble, Yuval Weinberg, Capella Helvetica.
