Mario Lucio is a singer, guitarist, composer, poet, author, thinker, and former Minister of Culture of Cape Verde. As a visionary artist and committed advocate of Creolization, he combines African, European, and diasporic influences in his work. His music is a homage to the cultural diversity that shapes Cape Verdean identity. With his current album «Independance», Mario Lucio reflects on the profound changes experienced by Cape Verdean music after independence in 1975. Traditional expressions like Batuko, Tabanka, and Funaná, which were long suppressed, found their way back onto the stages and became symbols of cultural self-determination. Together with the Pan African Band, representing four African nations, he celebrates 50 years of independence of the former Portuguese colonies and the cultural renewal of Lusophone Africa. «Independance» combines personal memories with a Pan-African vision. The title deliberately merges the terms Independence and Dance, representing freedom, movement, and the return of a vibrant folk culture. Musically, Lucio bridges the Cape Verdean islands and the African mainland. Influences from Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, Senegal, Nigeria, and the Congo blend with Afrobeat, Soukous, Rumba, and Cape Verdean rhythms into a powerful, contemporary sound.
