Autumn Market and Grape Must Route

Every first weekend of October, teams of carriages connect the town of Payerne to its vineyards in Lavaux to bring back the harvested grape must to Queen Berthe's cellar. It is a timeless journey during the harvest season. Since 1996, led by Daniel Jomini, four horse-drawn carriages relive the Payerne wine tradition by bringing the must back to Queen Berthe's cellar. Over two days, the convoy crosses part of the canton of Vaud at the pace of horses, following the route of old cart drivers. Many festivities are organized throughout Saturday on the Market Square (around the Abbey). From 9 am to 6 pm, an autumn market with local flavors takes place. Musical entertainment, donkey rides, small animal exhibitions, and pumpkin carving and decorating workshops are on the program. Food is provided by the Lion’s Club.
