Description

With "Manon Lescaut," Giacomo Puccini established a series of tragic female characters, in which passionate devotion and existential despair are intertwined. In four large, filmically edited images, he depicts the life stages of the title character: the intoxicating love for student Des Grieux, a life in luxurious Parisian society, and finally exile and death in an American desert. The fleeting nature of this life concept is emphasized by director Barrie Kosky, who narrates the plot as an ongoing, feverish journey: Already at the first encounter of Manon and Des Grieux, death sits on the coachman's seat. After her celebrated Tosca, the soprano Sonya Yoncheva returns to the Zurich Opera House as Manon.
