MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer's brilliant interpretation of the timeless ABBA songs in the form of a cheerful and witty story about a mother, a daughter, and three potential fathers on an idyllic Greek island. The performances in Germany and Austria celebrate more than 25 years of MAMMA MIA! since its premiere in London in April 1999. And to this day, MAMMA MIA! is the third-longest running musical with over 11 million viewers in London's West End. MAMMA MIA! has been seen by more than 70 million viewers in 50 productions and in 16 different languages. In 2011, MAMMA MIA! was the first musical in the Western Hemisphere to be performed in Mandarin in the People's Republic of China. MAMMA MIA! developed into the eighth-longest running show in Broadway history, where it ran a record-breaking 14 years. Since its premiere in London's West End, the world's most spectacular and entertaining musical has been revitalized by two very successful film adaptations. The MAMMA MIA! film, produced by Judy Craymer in 2008, became the most successful musical of all time after its release, and the second film, MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN from 2018, is the most successful live musical film sequel of all time. The music and lyrics of MAMMA MIA! are by Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus. The screenplay was written by Catherine Johnson, directed by Phyllida Lloyd, and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast. The production was conceived by Mark Thompson, with lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Andrew Bruce & Bobby Aitken, and music direction, additional materials, and arrangements by Martin Koch.
