In the nursing home, Zev Guttman learns a shocking truth from his friend Max: The concentration camp guard who once murdered their families in Auschwitz is still alive – hidden under a false identity. One week after the death of his wife, the almost 90-year-old Zev, increasingly marked by dementia, remembers an old promise: He wants to find the perpetrator. With a letter as a memory aid, he sets out on a journey across America, always on the trail of a man who built a new life after the war as Rudy Kurlander. But the search becomes a trial – because there are four men with this name who could be the perpetrator.

Atom Egoyan directs an equally intense and highly suspenseful thriller about memory, guilt, and forgetting. The multi-layered casting of the possible perpetrators by Bruno Ganz and Jürgen Prochnow gives the story additional depth. Together with Oscar winners Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau, an intense performance is created that lingers long after.
