On stage, the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, the oldest symphony orchestra in Switzerland, presents a sound shaped by over two centuries of history, between embraced tradition and a spirit of discovery. Composed of musicians from around twenty nations and deeply rooted in Lucerne and the Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern (KKL), the ensemble radiates well beyond its borders today. At its helm, Michael Sanderling, principal conductor since 2021, pursues with the orchestra an artistic vision attentive to the grand frescoes of Romanticism. Alongside him, Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky, an artist of remarkable sensitivity and a virtuoso recognized on the greatest international stages, approaches a repertoire that is particularly familiar to him. He lends his touch, both powerful and poetic, to Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, a pinnacle of pianistic Romanticism and a work of creative rebirth after a period of doubt. The evening continues with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 'Pathétique', a heartbreaking score with a tragic breath, traversed by extreme emotions that the composer said were deeply personal. Created shortly before his death and hailed as a posthumous triumph, it resonates as a musical confession of rare intensity.
