In the shadow of systemic oppressions, the African-American imagination rises as a space of reinvention and healing, a refuge where pain becomes poetry and wounds turn into stories to share. Inspired by the thoughts of Bell Hooks and the aesthetics of Spike Lee, young choreographer Mamu Tshi affirms that krump dance can embody this quest for inner peace. Krump, with its cathartic brutality, allows for the release of buried emotions, reconnecting with oneself and others as a form of healing. But this healing is not solitary; it is carried by the strength and benevolent gaze of the group. Amandine Tshijanu Ngindu, known professionally as Mamu Tshi, is a Congolese-born dancer, choreographer, and speaker, now based in Lausanne, Switzerland. Renowned for her excellence in krump, Mamu Tshi was named “Dancer of the Year” in 2020 for her talent in this powerful, expressive, and liberating urban dance. Driven by a deep desire to facilitate trance and transmission, Mamu Tshi advocates for the integration of urban and underground art forms on major stages. Inspired by childhood memories marked by family dances and collective energy, she highlights the transformative power of movement and community in her creations and workshops, cultivating a spirit of connection, presence, and shared storytelling within the circle.
