There, the eerie showman Dr. Caligari presents the clairvoyant somnambulist Cesare. Cesare predicts Alan's death – and on the same night, Alan is murdered. Franzis suspects a connection with Dr. Caligari, who can initially dismiss the suspicion. With «Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari» from 1920, Robert Wiene set a milestone. For his expressionist silent film, the designers created a distorted world and the madness of the characters outwardly: They crafted entirely skewed perspectives, crooked chimneys, tilting houses, roofs running zigzag. The performers haunt this dream world with chalk-white faces. Decor and expressive acting continue to fascinate today. Thanks to a cooperation between the music club Kraftfeld and Kino Cameo, the film can be experienced in Winterthur with a live score by Dutch lutenist Jozef van Wissem. While the spooky story of hypnosis and somnambulism flickers across the screen, van Wissems strings will make the images vibrate. Jozef van Wissem has succeeded in rekindling fascination for the lute in the 21st century. In 2013, his contemplative compositions resonated in Jim Jarmusch's «Only Lovers Left Alive». His medieval-modern score gave the existential vampire drama a uniquely timeless atmosphere, earning van Wissem international recognition and the Cannes Soundtrack Award. Besides hypnotic lute pieces, van Wissems new live soundtrack for «Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari» also includes drones of electric guitars, found sound, electronic elements, and spoken word. «Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari»
