In one of his last books, Arnošt Lustig attempted a final reckoning with themes that mark his entire work – the incomprehensibility of the Nazi idea of the extermination of Jews on one side and love for life and everything bodily on the other. The main characters, young people filled with bodily desires, Gabriela Lágusová and Josef Reinisch, experience their forbidden love in the Theresienstadt ghetto. Transport can come any day, and so the heroes of the book find solace only in each other. They live fully and express things that they might never have voiced without the pressure of circumstances. They survive as long as they have each other's bodies. The result is a story full of love confessions and essayistic parables about the meaning of life.
