Description

Gustav Mahler embodies the grand-scale symphonic style of late Romanticism like few other composers. After the Resurrection Symphony at the season opener, he is therefore present with a second major work this season. In his Seventh Symphony, Mahler also "builds a world with all the means of the available technique" – a world full of emotional contrasts. It begins with a lament of the tenor horn and leads through romantically dark night music and a shadowy scherzo to a brightly shining finale. This music also tells of the world with march rhythms, natural sounds, herd bells, and horn romance. As music that evokes inner images, it opens another important line of this season: pictorial sound worlds that do not illustrate but open spaces of imagination. On the podium is Daniele Rustioni, one of the internationally sought-after conductors of his generation.
