Description

Smetana's Libuše holds an extraordinary position in Czech opera and culture. It is directly linked to our ancestors' efforts to restore Czech statehood and national independence. It was written for the opening of the National Theatre, a dream artistic institution, whose opening foreshadowed the later emergence of an independent state. Smetana's opera is based on the old Czech legend of Princess Libuše and the dispute between two brothers over paternal inheritance, as well as the contrasts between man and woman, strict justice and gentle kindness, between origins 'from the people' and 'noble' origins, and between the motifs of light and darkness.
