While Regula actively buzzes through her retired life like a bee, Herbert lets time pass without doing a prank, leafing aimlessly through obscure books, secretly drinking Calvados from early morning, and enjoying the company of their cat Ixefix, who has come to them. In short, he celebrates the heavenly sinful life of the retired slacker. Only contact with the quirky people from the Hameau, all of whom keep their secrets, prevents him from becoming a complete hermit. Life on the edge of the Morvan forests would indeed be paradisiacal if it weren’t for the neighbor Cafard, who terrorizes everyone with his reckless behavior and embroils Herbert in a bitter neighborhood feud. "Is this still me?" Herbert keeps asking himself. Hansjörg Schertenleib, born in 1957 in Zurich, trained typesetter and typographer, has been a freelance writer since 1982. His novellas, collections of stories, and novels such as the bestsellers The Signora's Room and The Rain Orchestra have been translated into a dozen languages and awarded numerous prizes, and his plays have been staged worldwide. Schertenleib lived twenty years in Ireland, four years on Spruce Head Island in Maine, and has been living in Burgundy since summer 2020. Following the reading, camera. lit. obscura offers the traditional soup.
