Description

Late Romanticism created with its vast soundscapes also the conditions for what later should act as great film music. In this program, monumental symphonics and vivid storytelling meet – in two works whose emotional immediacy remains unbroken to this day. Sergei Rachmaninov's second piano concerto begins with powerful chords of the piano, echoing like bell strikes. From this grows a passionate soul drama in which soloist and orchestra unfold wide melodic arcs, dark colors, and ecstatic intensification. Nikolai Lugansky, whose international career took off decisively in 1997 with the victory at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, is an ideal interpreter for this. Tchaikovsky's sixth symphony, the “Pathétique,” is also music of existential power. Tchaikovsky himself spoke of a program that “should remain a mystery to all.” Echoes of the Russian funeral liturgy, passionate climaxes, and the moving adagio finale evoke thoughts of farewell, lament, and a requiem in one's own cause.
